The GBIF Asia Regional Nodes Meeting 2024 Successfully Held in Beijing

On August 28-29, 2024, the "Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Asia Regional Nodes Meeting 2024" was successfully held in the National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(NSL). The meeting was organized by the GBIF Secretariat and co-hosted by NSL, the Biodiversity Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Asia Regional Members Committee of the IUCN. The meeting was conducted in a hybrid way of both physical and online, with a total of 38 participants from the countries like China, Denmark and Australia etc. Dr. Xiwen Liu, Director of the NSL, delivered a welcome speech. Ms. Maheva Bagard Laursen(Programme Officer for Community and Capacity from GBIF Secretariat), Dr. Zheping Xu(Nodes Regional Representative of GBIF Asia from NSL) and Dr. Mao-Ning Tuanmu (nodes regional representative deputy of GBIF Asia from Academia Sinica) co-chaired the meeting together.

This meeting was carried out in an open way. During the meeting, delegates of Asia regional nodes shared their progress over the past year and future considerations. Experts from the Asia Pacific Biodiversity Observation Network (APBON), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Asia Office, the Chinese Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS), and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) delivered talks on work and projects related to GBIF. Other invited experts shared specific application cases of biodiversity data. Participants discussed and envisioned the future development issues, experiences, and priorities of the GBIF Asia region. Finally, Prof. Keping Ma, the Vice Director and Secretary-General of the Biodiversity Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Mr. Joe Miller, the Executive Secretary of GBIF, summarized the key points and wrapped up the meeting. During the meeting, the attendees visited the digital scientific literature resource platform system of NSL.

GBIF is currently the world's largest biodiversity data platform(2.99 billion records), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences joined as a node since 2013. From this meeting, attendees clarified the future direction and thematic goals for GBIF's development in the Asia region and also expressed a desire to engage in more cooperation and discussions on data sharing, technical training, and promotion of use cases.
