October 27, 2010, Beijing China-- National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciencessigned the Agreement with BioMed Central Open Access Publication on Digital Long-term Preservation Cooperation, becoming the first institute signed this kind of agreement with BioMed Central. This is also the third agreement that National Science Library has sighed after the digital preservation agreements with Springer and Institute of Physics Publishing (IoPP).
Professor Li Jinghai, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Pan Jiaofeng, Deputy Secretary-general of Chinese Academy of Sciences was present at the signing ceremony, requested National Science Library to strengthen international cooperation to promote local long-term preservation. Professor Zhang Xiaolin, Director of National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Matthew Cockerill, Managing Director of BioMed Central signed the agreement.
BioMed Central is the biggest open publishing group of science, technology and medical journal. By the end of October,2010, BioMed Central has published 206 open access journals,about half of the journals have been included by SCI. According to the agreement, BioMed Central regularly provides all the metadata and full-text data of the open access journals to National Science Library, and then National Science Library preserves them in terms of the confirmed process and system, and provides services in accordance with certain conditions.
The agreement establishes a new approach of how to preserve and gain important international open access resources in China, embodies the leader and exemplary role of Chinese Academy of Sciences in improving open access of scientific and technical information, and setting up a credible digital intellectual infrastructure.
