Open Science Repositories Seminar Held Successfully

On June 30, 2026, the High-Level Academic Exchange Seminar on Open Science Repositories, hosted by the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSLC), concluded successfully. Centered on the theme Strengthening Interconnection and Interoperability of Open Repositories and Exploring Pathways for Open Access Collaboration, the seminar gathered 28 delegates from 10 leading domestic and international organizations and platform operators, covering global alliances, institutional repositories, scientific databases, information service platforms and preprint hubs.


Qian Li, Deputy Director, NSLC, delivered opening remarks. He pointed out that open science repositories underpin equitable knowledge access, faster scientific breakthroughs and collaborative research innovation. Repository platforms worldwide still grapple with information silos across system architectures, metadata standards and interoperability protocols. He proposed leveraging intelligent analytics technologies, taking knowledge mining as a core driver and cross-institutional coordination as a key approach to address these bottlenecks.


A lineup of Chinese and international experts delivered featured presentations:

Kathleen Shearer, Executive Director, Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR), outlined the latest global advances in institutional repository interoperability.


Lautaro Matas, Technical Director, LA Referencia, shared hands-on experience in resource aggregation, discovery services and multilingual semantic retrieval.


Zhao Wei, Director, Resource Center, Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China, reported on the development of the National Platform for Advanced S&T Information Communication (NAPSTIC).


Xie Jing, Director, Knowledge Systems Department, NSLC introduced the construction of PubScholar’s open scholarly ecosystem network.


Li Chengzan, Director, Data Publishing Laboratory, Computer Network Information Center, CAS, elaborated on data services compliant with the international FAIR Principles.


Xu Yongjun, Director, Center for Book and Information Resources, School of Information Resource Management, Renmin University of China, presented the core functions and development roadmap of the Philosophy and Social Sciences Preprint Platform (PSSXiv).


Liu Xia, Director, Decision Support Services, Wuhan University Library, showcased outcomes of the university’s institutional repository built under the “one dataset, one source” governance principle.


In the interactive panel discussion, representatives from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Peking University and other institutions engaged in in-depth dialogue covering multiple key topics: institutional repository construction and sustainable operation models, integrated development of preprint platforms and institutional repositories, incentive schemes for research data deposition, technical cooperation on multilingual semantic retrieval, and strategies to elevate the global visibility of repository resources.


This seminar helped forge broader consensus among global developers and operators of open science repositories, while charting clear directions for technological upgrading and cross-border collaboration amid the AI era. Moving forward, all participating parties will build on this exchange to deepen international dialogue and joint innovation, continuously refine open science governance frameworks, and jointly construct an interconnected global open science repository system featuring independent, secure operation capacities.
