At the invitation of the organizers of Open Science Fair 2025, the National Science Library, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSLC), together with the CAST UN Consultative Committee on Open Science and Global Partnerships (CCOS) and the UN International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (2024–2033, the “Science Decade”), co-hosted the workshop “Fostering Global Collaboration in Open Science Infrastructure Sharing” on 16 September 2025 at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
As the first thematic workshop on the main programme of Open Science Fair 2025, the event marked the first occasion on which a Chinese-led initiative formally set out the concept of an Open Science Information Infrastructure Sharing Network Alliance. The proposal drew close attention and an enthusiastic response from participants and international stakeholders.
The workshop was chaired byDr. Jinxia Huang, Professor and Deputy Director of NSLC’s Open Science Research Center. In the keynote segment, Dr. Huang, Professor-level Senior Engineer Jing Xie, and Associate Research Librarian (Associate Professor)Fang Wang presented the background to the Chinese scientific community’s “Open for Science10” initiative in response to UNESCO’s Science Decade, and outlined progress to date as well as next steps for the proposed Open Science Information Infrastructure Sharing Network and Alliance.
In the panel discussion, Associate Research Librarian (Associate Professor) Man Xiao moderated an in-depth exchange among four experts: Dr. Nokuthula Mchunu, Director for International Collaborative Grants and Partnerships at the National Research Foundation, South Africa; Dr. Kathleen Shearer, Executive Director of the Confederation of Open Access Repositories (COAR); Dr. Eloy Rodrigues, Executive Board Member and Vice-Chair of OpenAIRE; and Dr. Jingyu Liu of the Pubscholar team at NSL-CAS. The panel focused on the vision for globally shared and federated open science infrastructures, models of collaborative governance, and concrete pathways for alliance-based collective action. The discussion was lively and highly interactive.
This workshop marked the first time China’s scientific community has organized a thematic forum at a major international open science conference. With its clear focus and pragmatic discussion, it showcased China’s sense of responsibility and substantive contribution to the global open science agenda. The constructive proposals put forward at the meeting were widely commended, laying a solid foundation for the future development of the Alliance and injecting fresh momentum into South–South cooperation and the pursuit of more equitable global access to knowledge.
